From An Outsider: A Basic Survival Guide in Cauayan, Isabela

What would you do if you have one day to spend in Cauayan, Isabela?

Eat? Nahh.
Nature Tripping? Hmm. Maybe.

Just recently, we were flown to Cauayan to prepare for the opening of the first Supermall in the region -- and because of that, we hardly had any time to roam around the city. The farthest we have gone, I think, is in Talavera, which I believe is just 10 minutes away from our hotel! Haha! Boo!

But of course, that shouldn't stop me from sharing my experiences, right?

Although not yet fully urbanized, it's not hard to fall in love with the city. Like any other provinces, I know there's something in here worth discovering, if people would only take the time to see.

Below are a few notes we've taken note of during our stay, that will hopefully come in handy when you plan your next weekend getaway..

So, pano? See you in Cauayan?

#1 – Where to stay:
RYKAS RESTAURANT AND EXECUTIVE PADS
Cauayan Road – San Fermin, Cauayan City, Isabela
Contact Number: (078) 652 11 56

Rates: Php 1,600.00/per night for a double occupancy room.

The rooms are clean and well maintained. Heavily decorated, I must say, and relatively appressed with basic commodities like: the (2) single beds, cable TV, vanity table, small dining, tub with hot and cold shower.

..and oh! Did I mention there’s free breakfast too? – Nothing fancy, but the beef tapa is worth a try.

Other choices for hotel accommodation includes:
  • HOTEL ANDREA
Don Jose Canciller – Brgy. District 1, Cauayan City, Isabela
    Contact Number: (078) 652 2023
    Website: www.thehotelandrea.net
  • AMITY HOTEL
National Highway – Cauayan City, Isabela
    Contact Number: (078) 652 2010 / 652 2037
    Website: www.amityhotel.com

#2 – Where to eat:
Must-try local delicacy:

PANCIT BATIL PATONG
A local delicacy made of pancit and minced carabao meat popularly served in local cafeterias in the city. Batil Patong if directly translated means "beaten egg"(Batil) and "placed on top"(Patong).

Batil Patong - Php 60.00 per serving

According to the locals, this dish is commonly mistaken as Pancit Cabagan for the similarity of ingredients, but what makes it different from the latter is the kind of noodles used in the dish -- Batil Patong uses egg noodles and is commonly served dry with a cup of dark soup and poached egg, while the other uses Cabagan noodles, cooked with a thick sauce and boiled quail eggs.

Restaurants:
KABAYAN GRILL

Located right in front of Rykas Hotel. Note that there are two different Kabayan Grills in the city -- one is similar to a typical local cafeteria where they serve unlimited arroz caldo for only Php 20.00, and the other one is like an upscale restaurant that serves native food and delicacies.

We were able to try both and I think the two serves well for their market -- whether you're feeling on a budget or have a bit to spare, (..or maybe just craving for a variety of silog and seafood) Kabayan Grill is definitely your fool-proof bet on restos!

#3 – Places To Visit
Although we weren't able to wander around the city as much, we were able to gather a few places in Cauayan that we're hoping to visit when we go back:
  • Our Lady of Pillars Church
  • Mushroom Farms in Brgy. Tagaran
  • Cortez Fishpond for an Al Fresco Lunch
If you're familiar in the city, and have discovered more places worth a visit,
feel free to comment down below so I can include them on the list.

#4 – Transportation
PLANE
Flying from Manila, it only takes about an hour to get to the city – perfect for a quick weekend escape! Just take note though that there are currently limited flights available, MWF with only 1 flight schedule per day via Cebu Pacific Air.

BUS
Bus trips to Cauayan are available every day, but it usually takes about 8 to 10 hours via land. One way ticket costs Php 490 each from Victory Liner Terminal in Kamias to Cauayan City.

Tip: I recommend you book your trip ahead to ensure your trip from Manila. There’s usually a long lane for chance passengers gambling a small probability to get on board. Been there. Done that.

TRICYCLE
Minimum Fare is Php 10/person – sample trips are from Rykas Hotel to SM or Talavera and vice versa. From the Airport to the Bayan (or in our case, to Rykas Hotel), it usually costs Php 25/person , but be mindful of the drivers taking advantage of the tourists in the area, some will charge twice the fare if you look unfamiliar to the place.

...and that's it!
..let me know if you have plans of going to Isabela, so I can come too! Haha!
..let's organize a road trip to the neighboring towns, shall we? Let me know below! :)
